*yeah. Basically. You can’t go wrong with Michael.

I’m always trying to create a list of my all time favorite songs. I have no clue why. Obviously, it is damn near impossible to come up with such a list. I wind up with different songs each time I attempt to narrow it down. But I’ve noticed that there are a few songs that are constantly on said list. They are:

  • My Favorite Things” - John Coltrane
  • Make Me Say it Again” - The Isley Brothers
  • Who Got the Props” - Black Moon
  • Electric Relaxation” - A Tribe Called Quest
  • Check Yourself” - Ice Cube

Super random, I know.

What are some of your all time favorite songs?

I went to my little brother’s jazz concert last night.

He plays the drums and is freaking fan-tastic! I really hope he pursues music as a legit life path because that dude is beyond AMAZING!

Anywho, while at this concert, I noticed that there aren’t many black people playing jazz. Of the two groups that I saw, there might have been about 3/4 black kids, 1 of which is my brother. Why aren’t more kids interested in this art form that we created? More interested in this complex, beautiful art that dances in your ears, gently kisses your heart, and aggressively touches your senses? All I could think while sitting in that auditorium, was that they stole our music. But maybe we’ll get it back. Or maybe not. Me and my brothers have a unique apprecitaion for music because of the things we were exposed to. Our dad playing old records on the weekend. Taking us to see the O’Jays. Every summer our family would go to the Long Beach Jazz Festival. And we all played an instrument at one point of our lives (them longer than me). So we have an understandable ear when it comes to music. I just wish more black kids had the chances we had…

I initially starting writing this to say that I want a musician friend. Specifically a jazz musician. I want to sit in on some jam sessions. Sit back and listen to some good music with people who appreciate it. People who understand and can teach me a thing or two about it. Also, musicians are just dope and all around chill individuals.

s/n: one of the trumpet players fainted in the middle of the song. He played his part, passed out, got up, and continued to play like nothing happened. He started back on the right notes and everything. Finished up the set like a boss! Lol.

s/s/n: my brothers friend won a music scholarship last night as well. He’s the only other black kid in my brothers specific jazz class (there’s about 4 different classes, all separated by level). He is dope as all hell on the trumpet and I believe he’ll be going to ASU. I can’t imagine how he’ll sound in the future once he’s perfected his craft.
